Idaho Clearwater steelhead

Now is the time to be fishing anywhere in the 30-mile stretch of the Clearwater river, between lewiston and lenore, Idaho. Most of the winter run is in, hunkering down for the winter in this 30-mile stretch. Drifting eggs and corkies, or just straight roe is best. Using pencil lead to get on the bottom. Plugs are another option, but the real key to running plugs is to be fishing the bottom of the hole. What ever you decide to go with remember, the ones right near the bottom are the real biters.

If a boat is not an option, take Highway 12 out of Lewiston and keep an eye out for that "soft water" areas of the river that are slower moving. From shore use a slip bobber bait combo and drift along the bottom. Plugs, spoons and spinners are all great things to try as well.
