White river unit elk hunting

2010 elk hunting success:

Wow what a year? We arrived at elk camp on the 5th of November and found the temperature a warm 50 plus degrees. Not quit what you would expect to find at 2700 feet on Mt Hood in November. There seem to be no shortage of hunters in the area either, But you hunt with the cards you are dealt?
After setting up camp we started to go over what we planned to do the next morning. We decided to split up, two of our party, Grandpa and Levi would hunt high in the timber. Cody, Keith and myself would go low boarder to the farmers fields. We thought this would help get a better understanding of what the elk where doing.
Opening morning Five thirty, TIME TO HUNT! There has got to be a word that describes that feeling, Its dark, the forest is completely silent, and its just you and nature, AWESOME!
After a long hike in we decided to split up and find a good place to site down. Keith went Left Cody in the middle and I went high on the ridge. Cody and Keith had a great set up on the bottom meadow I was located high in the oak thickets.
Coyotes filled the canyon with barks and calls for over an hour or so and then came the first shot. I knew it was one of my party but for some reason didn't think much of it? And then came the second Shot. Now I knew something was going on and sure enough here he came, I could not believe it! He was huge, Four point or better. I had one chance about 70 yards down hill and I took the shot. WOW! No more than a little over and hour into opening morning and we had a massive bull elk down. We where so excited! After about 1/2 hour we started tracking the bull. Minutes turned into hours still no elk we looked for over four hours and decided to get some lunch and resume the search later that afternoon.
After a very extensive search in the after noon we located our prize. He had finally lay ed down under a large Douglas Fir tree. What a great hunt!

I have been hunting small game for a long time. I am planning to go for big game, such as an elk, in my next hunting expedition. Your article provides very interesting declarations, which provide useful insights on elk hunting. I also read more on elk hunting here: http://survival-mastery.com/skills/scouting/elk-hunting.html
