Washington Albacore Tuna

This summer Get ready for some great Albacore Action. Late June and into July is the time to head to Westport, Washington. Albacore tuna offer the chance to hook into multiple fish at once; drag-screaming runs; incredible, hard fighting fish; generous bag limits; and above all, exquisite table fare. These fish can be caught trolling, fishing live bait (anchovies), deep jigging with butterfly jigs and even casting topwater plugs.

Gear up: Start with a 7-ft rod rated for 20 to 40-pound line, such as an Okuma Tail Walker series or a G.Loomis PSR84-30Su. Match the rod with the reel Okuma Titus T-15, a lever drag reel that can hold 250 yards of 40-pound monofilament. For your main line, run 65-pound braided line or 40-pound monofilament to a 3-to 4-foot leader of 80- to 150-pound monofilament. Rig your jigs with 7/0 to 10/0 double hooks.

RESEARCH FIRST: Before burning any fuel on the high seas, you'll want to find the tuna-warm waters. Look for 59 to 62 degrees on a temperature break for a starting point on the Terrafin chart. (Terrafin Chart) Terrafin also offer chlorophyll charts, which give you a read on the location of plankton. On the ocean, look for where blue and green water collide. Green water is nutrient-rich and full of plankton that tends to hold baitfish; blue water is sterile.Best fishing is where blue water meets green and temps are 62 degrees.

Be Safe: When you go offshore, you need to be prepared. Know your boat, crew and, most importantly, your limitations. if you're unsure of any, take a charter instead.
